A scary scary story in honor of Halloweekend: Mama Mouse knows someone who used to set her wedding ring on the counter whilst washing dishes. She knew it was there, and she washed dishes alone most of the time, so it was safe enough for awhile. But then she set it on the counter during a holiday dinner when people were helping her clear the dishes. Someone wiped the counter with a cloth, sending the ring sailing right down into the RUNNING garbage disposal. Diamonds are tough, but that sucker was pulverized.

Mama Mouse has a pretty good solution to this problem. She has a little box that lives right near every workspace in which she would want to take her ring off.* This one lives next to the kitchen sink, lined with a little bit of paper towel. It's a good heavy box, so it cannot be knocked into the sink, and its big enough not to be toppled accidentally. She also chose one that looks both delicate and expensive,** which means people are less likely to eff with it. She has a little box on her bathroom sink, a little ring stand on her vanity, and a little quilted box in the laundry room, all for this. She always knows where her rings are. Not a bad idea, right? What do you do to keep your ring safe, nice mice?

Also, do you take your rings off? A woman at the gym was wearing hers this morning. Mine's so new and shiny I'm afraid to wear it to the gym. But I hate to take it off.

* There are lots of them, by the way, because Mama Mouse wears LARGE jewelry. She is not a shy woman. And her wedding ring, which is now a post-divorce right-hand sapphire ring, is something she designed herself in the eighties. No delicate vintage for her.
** But probably isn't, because she is an accomplished sale shopper and also has incredible mall juju. You'll be browsing near her and she'll come up to you and say something like, "Hey, this is your size, right? Isn't it cute?" and she'll be holding this perfect designer evening gown marked down to $7.

Oh yes I take my ring off! I don't sleep, shower, or put gunk in my hair with it on. All very bad for gold and diamonds. Oh and clean the house but I don't do that too often! I do need a little box though, right now I just put it in the corner of my nightstand before bed and pop it back on before I head out in the morning.

I realized I needed a place to put them because i take my ring off very rarely and can never remember where I put it. I like these beauties from Providence Art Glass: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=33394351&ref=sr_gallery_20&&ga_search_query=heart+ring+holder&ga_search_type=handmade&ga_page=&order=date_desc&includes[]=tags&includes[]=title

My requirements for a ring were that I never take it off ever. And I don't.

My grandmother used to take her ring off to put on lotion and hair stuff (bad for rings, as A Fortunate Bride mentioned). One day it was on her lap, she forgot, she got up, it rolled away, and was never found again. Worse, it was a old old family diamond and one of those rare flawless stones. In it's previous life it was a Tiffany's test diamond, and they tested all other stones against it. And now it's gone forever. So. Needless to say I don't remove mine for anything ever. I've also heard of them disappearing of bedstands. Nothing is worse for a ring then losing it.

And silly Mouse, the point of the ring is to get it old and beaten up. Being newly engaged is fun, being a old married is something to be proud of.

PS In this case I'm talking wedding ring. I don't wear my engagement ring.

Meg, this brings up my related question: I'm not a two-rings girl. I want to just wear my engagement ring as my wedding band. Do you still vote for not taking it off?

I agree about the scratches. :)

That is a horrifying story, Mouse. I don't even have rings, but now I am wary of garbage disposals like I have never been before.
I think one place is probably best - perhaps you could have one receptacle say on your dressing table (away from drains and water sources) where you could leave it while doing housework. Then you wouldn't have to check each little box in the house?

These are the questions of our time...

I lost my wedding band a few weeks after we got married. It was a little loose and lost it when I jumped in the water while on a white river rafting trip:)

i agree. thing are meant to wear with age. [and um, my ring is 70 years old, but who would know if not for the style?]

i only take mine off when i wake up in the middle of the night sweating cause it's hot and i freak out cause i'm swelling and i feel like my finger is toooo tight. it's weird.

then i put it back on when i wake up.

oh, and i only have one ring. we didn't even have a ring exchange in out ceremony.

[and, the reason is gets tight in the middle of the night is so that it is tight over the knuckle and wont ever slip off]
