Part two in our dress-hunt story: at this point, the saleswoman is furrowing her brow at us when she thinks we aren't looking. The process of clipping Mouse into the dresses is brusque. And, actually, we almost like this second dress: it has plenty of texture, the cap sleeves are cute, and the bottom hem is the good kind of ruffles. However: 1. to quote Mouse's mom, "What in the world is that ribbon doing there? Can't we take that thing off?" and 2. The lace is cut out. Each little scroll or leaf or flower stands by itself, leaving all these holes in the outermost layer of the dress. Meaning that it never smooths down. And meaning that well-meaning fingers of Tiny Niece might tear the thing in half during the dancing. I'm also realizing, at this point, that the mermaid cut must be meant for women with waists and boobs and hips, rather than rectangular people like me. So the dress gets an overall score of "meh."

(2. The dress with a million holes)

Ha ha, my reaction was "love the cap sleeves, love the hem, but why is it all lumpy?" Knowing it's got a million holes explains everything. It's definitely a "well, almost ... but, no."

This might be the first mermaid cut dress that I actually like.

It's quite pretty I think, at least in pictures.

Also, deciding what you think you'd like to do with a dress afterwards is a good thing when dress shopping.

It is a bit lumpy, but also awfully pretty. And as a fellow rectangular person, mermaid dresses are simply not very workable. They are definitely meant for people who curve in and out all over the place.

Petitechablis: I know, right? Nnnno.

Kaitli: good call. I think I'm in the wear once, then save as an heirloom category.

Rachel: Yay! Rectangular people unite! Generally, rectangular works great for clothes--just not for strapless mermaid dresses. I don't go out-in-out, I just go up and down.

In fact, no. I have boobs and hips and go out and in all over. The mermaid looks stupid on everyone. Or at least, as an out-and-in person their are a million things that look much much better. Have you tried the long lace sheath, in the 1920's vein? If you can find an affordable one, they are built for you. I loved them but many things looked much better on me.

Have you tried looking at non-wedding shops lady? The dresses have more... soul... I did the bridal salons and while everyone was lovely and nice, yeah, no.

Meg, ok, so who are they making all those strapless mermaid things for?!

Hmmm, twenties lace sheath...excellent idea...

I have boobs and hips and the saleslady said, "This dress is made for slimmer people," which apparently means rectangle (because the cut is nice on you) and then I raised my eyebrows and marched my pretty bum out of David's Bridal.
