Hello from the land of tight wedding budgets! We've moved into discussions about alternatives to traditional save-the-dates. I think we might send electronic ones to people who are computer-savvy, but there are several people (on both sides) who will need a piece of paper to arrive in the mail. Good and proper.
So, not being a designer, but being conscious of style, I've started mulling over how to make something that looks better than my very amateur Photoshop experiments, and cooler than an un-embellished postcard. I love Papier Valise for this reason: they have loads of cool old vintage trinkets, bits of paper and trimming, interesting envelopes and tickets and labels. It won't take much, with these materials, to make something stylish and thoughtful.
Other ideas for inexpensive save-the-dates?

(From top: admit one tickets, orange envelopes with round windows, and cigar labels, all vintage from Papier Valise.)

These are my favorite save the dates, via A Practical Wedding:

Awwwww.
We would have skipped them, really. NO ONE paid attention to them at all, or even understood what they were. Worse, the older generation thought they were silly. Which was a huge amount of trouble and, oh $200? wasted. Ah, DIY. Anyway, I'd call people. Or write them a note. And then focus on the wedding invites, which can be magic sometimes (ours were).

Bookbag, I love those!

Meg, I'm starting to see your point, there. Sigh.
